Saint Joseph Catholic Church
Client: Saint Joseph Catholic Church
Background and Issues
Located in a growing suburb of Saint Paul, Minnesota, the Saint Joseph Catholic church was growing rapidly. The historic church in downtown was no longer large enough to hold the congregation. The church procured open land just a few blocks away to build a new church. The diocese and the congregation wanted a church that would reflect the traditions of their faith and their community. The stained glass windows of the historic church were particularly valuable to them.
The new sanctuary seats 12,000 worshipers. The stained glass windows from the historic church were carefully restored and incorporated into the new sanctuary. The large glue laminated beams of the space stretch the limits of this technology. The building also includes a large foyer for gathering, a multipurpose room for dinners and events, classrooms, and offices. Great care was taken in detailing the exterior brickwork and interior woodwork to reflect a level of workmanship comparable to their old church.
Heidi Y. Granke was the project architect for this project while at BWBR Architects.
