El Portal Market
Client: National Park Service, Yosemite National Park
El Portal, California
Background and Issue
As the only store in town, the El Portal Market serves both park visitors and park employees. The next closest store is about 30 miles away. When the historic market burned to the ground, it was a high priority to get the market back up and running as soon as possible. The original registration building for the historic El Portal Motor Lodge, located just a short distance down the highway, was quickly identified as the new home for the El Portal Market. Prior to the rehabilitation, the building was used as offices.
The project included some seismic reinforcing, minor repairs to the exterior walls, and a new roof. The building form was retained intact. All of the interior partition walls, ceilings and finishes were removed. The historic stone fireplace and chimney were restored. New lighting, shelving, refrigeration cases and check stand were installed. A small kitchen is located at the back of the store to prepare soups, salads and sandwiches for sale. The project was completed on an expedited schedule to meet the community and visitor needs.
Heidi Y. Granke was the project architect for this project while with Architectural Resources Group.
